Arizona Lottery Changes: June 2026

The Arizona lottery officially began in 1981 with the launch of its very first scratch off game “Scratch It Rich.” This was followed by The Pick in 1984. Decades later, Arizona is making the most of its existing games by upgrading several games including The Pick.

There are four significant changes that mark forty-five years of lottery operations. They are as follows:

  • Powerball now has a Double Play option in its format, giving players a second chance to win.
  • The Pick now offers a new number pool and multipliers, but comes with an increased ticket price.
  • Pick 3 has launched a midday edition of its game, allowing players to take part twice a day.
  • Pick 4 is now available in the Grand Canyon State, offering even more draw game variety.

Read on to find out more about each change.

Powerball: Double Play Launched

Double Play is an extra Powerball drawing that happens after the main event. Players simply select the add-on on their playslip or ask the retailer for it (if buying tickets in person), and the same numbers that you picked for the main drawing get a ‘second chance’ in the Double Play drawing.

The great feature of Double Play is its gargantuan top prize of $10 million. Plus, it costs only an extra $1 per play on top of your standard $2 Powerball ticket, and quite literally doubles the experience and fun. What’s more, it is possible to win a prize in both the main game and the Double Play drawing on the same night.

History of Double Play

Double Play was launched in August 2021 alongside the introduction of the new Monday night Powerball drawings, initially rolling out in 13 states. However, it became a massive hit and over two dozen states progressively voted to update their state systems to support it. Jurisdictions realized their potential to boost ticket sales and make Powerball more engaging.

On June 15, Arizona joined the party and brought the state into this multi-jurisdictional feature, providing local players a shot at that fixed $10 million secondary prize pool three nights a week.

How to Add Double Play to Your Powerball Ticket

  • Pick your numbers: Business as usual here. Select five white balls from the set of 69 and one red number from the 26 Powerballs. There is no need to pick another number set.
  • Check Double Play: Check the Double Play add-on box. If buying tickets in-person, request Double Play from the retailer or check the relevant box with a black or blue pen.
  • Enjoy the Draw: The numbers you picked will be played in the main drawing and get a ‘second chance’ in the Double Play drawing that’s held right after the main Powerball drawing.
  • Check Results: Collect any winnings you’re due. Remember that the Power Play multiplier does not apply to Double Play prizes. You win $10 million if you match all five numbers plus the Powerball.

The Pick: Updated

Arizona makes major updates to its first ever official draw game, The Pick. This includes a boosted jackpot of $4.5 million on June 17 to commemorate the 45th year.

A New Number Pool

The number selection is now 6/40 instead of 6/44, drastically reducing the number of possible number combinations. With the old 6/44 way, there were about 7.05 million possible combinations, giving you a 1 in 7,059,052 chance of hitting the jackpot.

The new pool drops the possible combinations down, giving you a 1 in 3,838,380 chance of hitting the jackpot. Meanwhile, your overall odds of winning any prize drop from 1 in 39 to 1 in 30.

Ticket Price Increase

Ticket prices are increasing to $2. Twice the price. But if the same number of players buy The Pick tickets as before, then the jackpot is doubled due to the growing prize pool via ticket purchases.

The lower odds mean the jackpot could be hit more frequently, but the increased revenue means the starting jackpot and the rate at which it rolls over between drawings will grow much faster.

Multipliers Added

There is now an optional built-in multiplier in the game which allows players to boost prize payouts by X5. This is like changes recently made to Mega Millions, which now include extra add-ons with the ticket price. The same is true for The Pick – the $2 ticket price also gets you a randomly generated multiplier of 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x.

The Pick Plus

This brand-new optional instant win extra can be played for an extra $1. It’s not related to the main drawing, and gives players a shot at winning up to $50.

Pick 3: Midday Edition Launched

If you enjoy your daily dose of Pick 3 in the evening, then you’ll be excited to learn that a second daily drawing is being added to the game; the Midday edition. Same rules and prizes, but more quantity and twice as many opportunities to win.

Historically, Arizona’s Pick 3 has only been drawn once a day in the evening. Adding a second, daily midday drawing brings Arizona in line with how many other major state lotteries run their daily 3-digit games.

Because there are now two drawings a day, playslips and lottery terminals are updated so you must explicitly choose whether you are buying a ticket for the Midday drawing, the Evening drawing, or both.

What is Pick 3?

Pick 3 is a highly customizable daily game where you choose a lucky three-digit number from 000 to 999 and attempt to match it with the drawn numbers. You can play it in several different ways – including Straight (win in exact order), Box (win in any order), and Straight/Box (win in a combination of Straight and Box) – and can win a top prize of $500.

Pick 4: New Game Launched

Pick 4 is the new game available to Arizona residents that offers higher payout options for a short-form daily draw.

For the uninitiated, it’s a lot like Pick 3 except there is another digit to match, hence its name. Like Pick 3, you can win in a variety of ways - match the numbers in drawn order, any order, or a combination of Straight and Box (and other ways too), but it features a top prize of $5,000.

  • Twice-Daily Drawings: Pick 4 will be available twice a day – once at Midday and once in the Evening – seven days a week, matching the new Pick 3 schedule.
  • Dynamic Play Styles: Choose which way to play the game. Straight allows you to win by matching the numbers in exact drawing order, Box to win by matching winning numbers in any order (lower prizes) and Pair Play, which allows you to win by matching either the Front Pair (first two digits) or the Back Pair (last two digits) for a smaller, easier-to-hit prize.
  • Bigger Payouts: Matching four digits in order is 10x more difficult than matching three, and so the prizes are certain to be bigger than those offered in Pick 3. The full prize matrix has not yet been released but Pick 4 prizes in other states offer a $5,000 top prize on a $1 wager.
  • Multi-Draw Options: You can enter as many as 12 consecutive draws, ensuring you get two chances of winning Monday through to Sunday.
