The History of The Pick

Launched in 1984, The Pick is Arizona’s own in-state jackpot game and its first drawing was on October 13. Initially, you had to pick six numbers from a selection of 39, but this was changed to a pool of 44 eventually. The biggest jackpot was $14.6 million and this occurred in 2019.

In June 2026, the format was updated again. The Arizona Lottery reduced the number pool from 44 to 40 to “pave the way for bigger payouts and faster-rolling jackpots on Arizona’s flagship game." Jackpot odds went from 1 in 7,059,052 to 1 in 3,838,380 (about 1.8x better). Overall odds went from 1 in 39 to 1 in 30.

Since these format changes have happened, the data in this article comes from both the 6/44 draws and the more recent 6/40 draws.

What Does It All Mean?

There are great benefits to having an awareness of the draw frequency of each The Pick number. Sadly though, none relate to the likelihood of your numbers being drawn. Every draw in The Pick is independent and the six numbers that are drawn in each event are completely random. This means that the draw frequency of any given number has no impact. 2, the most drawn since 2008 in The Pick, is not more likely to be selected than 10, the least drawn number. Or vice versa.

However, the benefits you can experience are as follows:

  • Enhancing the Fun: Insights into the history of the draw can make the experience a lot more fun than simply choosing your numbers and going ahead. It can make each number unveiling more significant.
  • Using New Number Strategies: You may be tired of using the same numbers repeatedly, or simply not have time to make a considered selection. The statistics can guide you towards a selection by showing you what’s been drawn the most and least.
  • Getting Insights: Picking numbers blind can make you feel like it’s just a stab in the dark, whereas going in with knowledge of what has come before can give the draw game experience more character and lore (if you wish).
