Baseball is over - Now What
The season ends and one team is named the winner (Red Sox fans please get sober). The rest go home to lick their wounds. It's that way in MLB and it's that way in Fantasy Baseball, too. If you play other fantasy sports those keep you occupied until the baseball season begins, but for seamheads the season ending is horrifying. Remember when Jeannie Jane DeMarco left you standing girlfriendless at the end of the 10th grade? No one would ever kiss you again, right? Same way for fantasy baseball fans once the ball hits the glove the last time. That grim, empty feeling worthy of the best?/worst emo song gnaws at the lining of your stomach. Until, you realize there are more Jeannie Jane DeMarcos in this world and damn if I'll let this one pull me down. Those looking for excitement smelling of horsehide (or Windsong)... read further. Fall Leagues There aren't Fantasy Leagues that follow the Arizona or Hawaiian Leagues (none that we know of, at least) but it's a hotbed of future talent. Where did we first learn that Joba Chamberlain could throw the sphere? Hawaii. Where do most MLB teams send their top talent to play in the fall? Arizona. If in the area this is a way to see top minor league talent playing against one another. Or you can read about it and get a head start on the competition for next year. Winter Leagues These are the Fall Leagues but played in the Caribbean and Mexico. And in the winter. They also consist of young talent, sprinkled with players looking to get back into the big leagues. Many times some of the better Latin players will play as the season gets closer to Spring Training. The season is longer and the players more established; an ideal way to get back into baseball after a short break. The games are televised, too. And, if you can manage a trip to see some of the games, even better. Sim Baseball If Fantasy Baseball players are geeks, Sim Baseball players are the geeks of the geeks. Think Dungeons and Dragons players that dress as their characters everyday. Sim Baseball replays season's past. Using computerized simulations (the Sim in Sim Baseball) Sim Baseball does a reasonable job of representing what would happen if Babe Ruth met up with Jonathan Papelbon in Yankee Stadium. There are several Sim programs, websites, board games and leagues that will fit your needs. Trade If in a Keeper League, the offseason is a perfect time to trade. Ring up (put down the phone, we're talking email/IM) a fellow owner and make an offer. Maybe it's not anything earth-shattering but it's something. Toss out a list of players to everyone in the league that you want to move. Most owners ignore such things in November, but a few may discuss your players or, more likely theirs, but worst case it's a baseball discussion. Plan November is too early for serious Fantasy Baseball planning. Well, maybe not for the most fanatical fan - stop pointing. But it isn't too early to get an idea which players you like and follow them. Making a small list of players to watch isn't a bad idea and hooking up with a news site where you can tag these players on a watch list is even better. Every time they breathe, you hear about it. Realistically, getting worked up about the end of the baseball season or any season is silly, as it was when Jeannie Jane DeMarco gave you the shove. Damn if she wasn't a good kisser.
